British Library plans website overhaul

Major website development to support transition from physical to digital delivery of British Library collections

The British Library is planning a major project to build a new online platform and replace its existing website.

Over the next 3-5 years it will run a web redevelopment project to create a new online presence that will provide targeted content for researchers, learners and the public, according to an invitation to tender published in the Official Journal of the European Union.

"The idea is to accelerate the transition from physical to digital delivery of our collections," a spokesman for the library told GGC.

"The tender will encompass project scoping, technical architecture reviewing and standards development, information architecture and user experience design, graphic design and brand integration."

The contract will be divided into two lots. The first will create a "global experience language" for the library, which will include creating a comprehensive information architecture. The second will provide the technical architecture for the library's web estate up to 2020.

At the end of November the library launched a dedicated British Newspaper Archive website, with access to up to 4m fully searchable pages. It was created under a 10 year partnership with online publisher brightsolid.
